Excellent news for Wales’ tier 1 Automotive suppliers as UK car production continues to rise.
The number of cars made in the UK in the first half of the year has risen by 3.5 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Research from the motor industry’s trade association indicates that 791,314 cars were produced in the first six months of 2014.
To put this into context, the figure was 764,390 for the first six months of 2013.
A total of 165,855 vehicles were made for the domestic market while 625,459 cars were destined for export.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “UK car production continued its steady growth in June, leading to a first half-year increase of 3.5 per cent. With several manufacturers having started assembly of new models this year and billions of pounds of investment still to reach production fruition, this is an exciting time for the UK automotive sector.
“However, with this growth comes a need to bolster the domestic supply chain and address major skills shortages; both of which the UK industry is committed to addressing.”
